Video - The Cost of Hope: Stories of Migrant Workers in Palm Oil Plantations in Malaysia

The Malaysia palm oil industry employs almost half a million workers, of whom about 80% are migrants mainly from Indonesia, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Despite their significant contribution to one of Malaysia’s most prominent economic sectors, these workers are often at risk of exploitation and human rights abuses.

The stories in the report are fictional but based on over 120 interviews with migrant workers who travelled to work in Malaysia in search of better lives for them and their loved ones.
