IOM and H&M Group Sign MoU to Promote Ethical Recruitment and Protect Migrant Workers

To promote cooperation and mutual assistance on ethical recruitment and protection of migrant workers in global supply chains, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and H&M Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on December 9, 2019.

Unethical recruitment practices and gaps in the governance of labour migration are leading risks that face migrant workers in the global economy. From fee-charging to workers and fraud during the recruitment, to the confiscation of personal documents and exchange of contracts during employment: these are common abuses that migrant workers encounter when they migrate for work. Through the partnership between the H&M Group and IOM, ethical recruitment in their global supply chains will be addressed.

To enhance safe, orderly and regular labour migration, IOM’s Corporate Responsibility in Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking (CREST) initiative works collaboratively with the private sector to enhance their efforts in tackling vulnerabilities of migrant workers in global supply chains. IOM also operates the International Recruitment Integrity System (IRIS) — a global initiative designed to promote ethical recruitment with the support of governments, civil society, the labour movement, private sector and ethical recruiters.
